Fashion designers Jodhi Meares and Gail Elliott joined Channel Seven
personality Kylie Gillies and hundreds of fellow walkers wearing pink
pony t-shirts in Sydney this morning to raise money for breast cancer.
More than 250 people took part in the third annual
four-kilometre Pink Pony Walk. So far, Pink Pony Australia has raised
more than $740,000 for Cancer Australia, which supports local nurses and
communities across the country.
This year they are hoping to raise more
than ever before and break the million dollar mark.
"It's a great turn out and I love the pink balloons (that)
are everywhere," said Meares. "It will help awareness and encourage
women to get early mammograms. I had my first mammogram when I turned 40
and it wasn't as bad as people made out so don't be afraid of getting
checked."
Gillies said money raised would also help provide nursing specialists in rural areas.
"For me I'm a Tamworth girl and this is about getting breast
care nurses in country areas where they are so isolated. It helps women
in rural areas know they are not alone," said Gillies.
This is Elliott's third year as an ambassador and her two dogs wore pink bandanas on the walk with her.
"We have our two little ambassadors with me - dogs encourage
exercise and a walk like this turns it into a fun family event and
raises awareness," said Elliott.
