Chic and sharp
We chat with fashion maven Melissa Hoyer, who promises to help you spruce up your wardrobe without charging a penny
AUSTRALIAN FASHION PERSONALITY Melissa Hoyer flies into town next week for a trio of free styling workshops at Harvey Nichols Dubai.
Sydney-based Melissa is offering visitors to the Mall of the Emirates
department store the chance to translate the latest catwalk trends into
their own wardrobes.
As well as serving as a judge on Project Runway and Australia’s Next Top Model, Melissa has written for magazines including Grazia and Instyle – interviewing celebrities from Elle Macpherson to Tommy Hilfiger.
She is also a regular style commentator on television, formerly co-hosting the series Fox Fashion alongside Hugh Jackman, and has worked as a stylist for The X Factor Australia.
City Times spoke to Melissa ahead of her visit to the UAE.
What are you aiming to bring to Dubai’s fashion-conscious ladies with your workshops?
The one thing most people want to know when it comes to new trends is
how to adapt them to their everyday life. I really hope I can show how
the best trends of the season can be worn in a sleek, stylish and
wearable way.
What did you most enjoy about appearing as a guest judge on Australia’s Next Top Model and Project Runway?
It’s always exciting to see new talent emerge, whether it’s from the
girls and boys on the runway, or the important people behind the newest
designer collections we see. I love supporting new talent and new names.
Is there one aspect of your career – be it TV, writing or
being a brand ambassador – that you’re planning to focus on over the
next year?
It’s all about fusing them all! Working within the media is such a
multi-faceted world so you often can’t do one without the other.
In your eyes, does the world have one true fashion capital?
I think it still boils down to Paris, simply because it is still the
one city where many trends start before they filter down to the
mainstream and to other capitals of the word. Milan has to be up there
too.
Do you advocate taking risks or staying true to classic styles in your wardrobe?
I think it’s about finding a look and style that suits you and that
you feel comfortable wearing, and then being experimental with the
latest trends – whether in new colours or fantastic, fresh accessories.
Which celebrities are currently wowing you with their style?
Lana Del Rey, Kate Middleton for her uncomplicated chic and Miranda Kerr.
